Mohandas Gandhi is considered the father of the Indian independence movement, who pioneereed satyagraha, or resistance through mass civil disobedience. Gandhi lived a life of simplicity and moral clarity, and his example of civil disobedience founded upon ahimsa, or total nonviolence has inspired protestors and campaigners for human rights and democracy the world over.
